When you think of Chris Evans, what comes to mind? Probably chunky cable-knit sweaters, that time you pulled a Lizzo and slid into his DMs, and the internet’s conspiracy that he was dating Selena Gomez. And probably not him shirtless and covered in chest tattoos.

Chris Evans doesn’t exactly give off “man who has chest tats” vibes, which is probably why the internet is in a constant state of shock every time a shirtless photo of him emerges and it turns out that he has a bunch. It’s a cozy and time-honored pattern: he pops up shirtless, society collectively spirals at his tattoos, everyone promptly forgets they exist, Chunky Sweater Chris returns, then another shirtless pic drops, and suddenly “Wait, Chris Evans has tattoos???” is once again taking over the timeline. Like:

And, *just for the record*, Chris is "all for tattoos"— he just prefers to keep his hidden. "I really like tattoos, but the problem is, when you wear a short-sleeve shirt in a movie, that's an extra hour in the makeup chair. It's not worth it," he dished during a 2014 interview with The Hot Hits.

So, in the spirit of making Chris Evans’s tattoos officially canon, here’s a rundown of what they are, where they’re located, and what they mean.

This Random Taurus Bull

Apparently, it’s his mom’s zodiac sign. How very Peter Weber of him.

His Group Avengers Tattoo

The entire cast has one, and the MCU fan you’re dating probably does too.

Robert Downey Jr. confirmed the tattoos to Entertainment Weekly, saying, “Five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo…the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo. It was Johansson’s idea, and she and Evans did it in New York. Then their New York guy Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to L.A., he did me, did Renner, and then we just bullied Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it.”

The Word “Loyalty”

Which you can clearly see in this incredible Gucci ad! Also, please note that Chris has had both this tattoo and his Taurus bull one since at least the ’90s. We love that for him!

His Giant Eagle Friend

They don’t call him Captain America for nothing, okay? Anyway, here's another angle for ya:

His “Dodger” Tattoo

Dodger is his dog’s name, and as you can see, he clearly likes his tattoo namesake.

He told Jimmy Kimmel that he got his dog's name inked shortly after adopting him in 2017. "That's probably one of the purest relationships I have," he said of his dog, who's named after the character from Oliver & Company. "It didn't take much convincing. I'll never regret that tattoo. I've regretted a few in my life, but not that one."

His Other Mystery Chest Tattoos

The way the internet spiraled when this video dropped, lemme tell you. For the most part, Chris’s chest tattoos are too far away and too blurry to be identified in this video, but we do know that he has a tribute tattoo to one of his close friends who passed away below his ribs. It reads, “In loving memory of Bardsley, with me always.” ❤️

Meanwhile, this one reads, “When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.” Words to live by/tattoo on yourself!

During a Q&A with Spreecast in 2013, Chris opened up about why he decided to get the quote inked. "I really like Eckhart Tolle, he wrote the book The Power of Now," he explained. "I am a big fan of Buddhism, Eastern Philosophy, the notion of trying to be present in the moment, turning the third eye off and detaching from ego Eckhart has a quote from his book called Stillness Speaks that just really resonated with me, enough to permanently ink my body."

Before we go, FYI, Chris also has a tattoo on the back of his leg that we tragically don’t have a picture of due to him choosing to wear pants most of the time (can’t relate). It says “SCS,” aka the initials of his siblings, Carly Evans, Shanna Evans, and Scott Evans.

K, off to wonder what other tattoos Chris is hiding, bye.
